In recognition of National Read Aloud Month in March, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation has united with iWRITE and 14 local literacy organizations to increase the awareness and importance of parents, grandparents, childcare providers, and teachers to read aloud to children so that they can effectively learn, grow and succeed.


March 7, 2017 – Shiver Book Release
The iWRITE Literacy Organization’s founder, Melissa M. Williams will be releasing her new bilingual book, Shiver to all of the students at Scroggins Elementary. March 18, 2017 – Family Literacy Festival
On March 18th the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation in partnership with iWRITE, Legacy Community Health, the Houston Public Library, the Harris County Public Library and the Children’s Museum of Houston will be hosting a family literacy event at Houston Housing Authority Kelly Village. At this event, our wonderful partners will be providing fun, educational activities to the residents including comic book writing, read alouds, and a Lego robotics build. In addition, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation is partnering with the Houston Housing Authority to dedicate a library to Kelly Village.


March 27, 2017 – “i” The Guy Visits Yellowstone Academy
Yellowstone Academy students will receive a check-in from “i” The Guy and the iWRITE staff. We will look over their work and let students share their favorite stories with one another.


March 28, 2017 – “i” The Guy Read Aloud at the Youth Development Center
Students participating in the “i” The Guy Journal Program at the Youth Development Center will be receiving a check-in from the “i” The Guy mascot. YDC Students will get a chance to meet the character that they’ve been writing with and share their stories with everyone by reading aloud.


March 30, 2017 –  Making it Better’s Family Literacy Night
These events are fun, interactive, outreach approaches that provide materials, education, and activities to encourage reading with families. Events are held at schools, community centers, and apartment complexes. Participants take home new books and supplies to practice what they have learned in order to make reading and developing literacy skills part of their daily routine. iWRITE will be working with students on story development with “i” The Guy comics and introducing residents to our various programs.
